Incomplete Abortion Secondary to Anemia Essay Example for Free
Incomplete Abortion Secondary to Anemia Essay Abortion is any pregnancy that terminates before the 20th week of gestation. Spontaneous abortion occurs as a natural termination of pregnancy prior to 20 weeks. Spontaneous abortion occurs more commonly in first trimester. In incomplete abortion, some of the products of conception are expelled, but some remained attached. Fetus usually expelled and placenta and membranes retained. Heavy bleeding and severe cramping continue until the placenta or other matter is removed. (Nettina, Sandra M. , (9th Edition). Lippincott Manual of Nursing Practice Wolterââ¬â¢s Kluwer Health) Management includes dilation and curettage (D and C). Dilation and curettage is an operation performed on women to scrape away the womb lining. The cervix of the uterus is dilated using an instrument called a dilator. The endometrium is then lightly scraped off using a spoon-shaped instrument called a curette. The first step in a DC is to dilate the cervix, usually done a few hours before the surgery. The woman is usually put under general anesthesia before the procedure begins. A curette, a metal rod with a handle on one end and a sharp loop on the other, is inserted into the uterus through the dilated cervix. The curette is used to gently scrape the lining of the uterus and remove the tissue in the uterus. This tissue is examined for completeness (in the case of abortion). (Galacio, G. T. ,(May 16, 2008). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimate puts the figure at nearly 800,000, one of the highest rates of abortions in Asia. Seventy percent of unwanted pregnancies in the Philippines end in abortion, according to the WHO. Pro-Life Philippines, an anti-abortion group, says that one of four pregnancies in the Philippines end in abortion. As many as 17 percent of all abortions are done on teenage or young mothers, according to the DOH. 36 percent of Filipino women become pregnant before abortion and 45 percent of all pregnancies are either unwanted or ill-timed, according to the World Health Organization.
